When Peter Cummings and his development partners began working with Whole Foods Market in 2011 to build its first Detroit store, a Whole Foods executive projected it would generate perhaps $12 million to $15 million a year.
Those projections were more than a little off. Since opening in 2013, Midtown Detroit’s Whole Foods has been generating $30 million annually, Cummings said.

Orangetheory Fitness to open in new apartment development in New Center

Orangetheory Fitness will open a new location in Detroit-based The Platform LLC’s new apartment development being built at West Grand Boulevard and Third Avenue.
The new location by owner and franchisee Scott Marcus, which would be the 17th in Michigan, is expected to open this winter in development called The Boulevard, which is slated to bring 231 apartments to the market along with 21,000 square feet of commercial space, the developer announced Wednesday during a real estate session of the Detroit Homecoming event.

If you haven’t been to the Fisher Building lately, the installation of “Olayami Dabls: Absorb, Reflect, Transmit” gives you a great reason to revisit the storied Art Deco skyscraper.
Nineteen paper cut-out “paintings” by artist Dabls documenting key moments in the civil rights movement from 1955-1965 have been scanned and blown up huge, completely filling the illuminated glass vitrines that line the ground floor of the Fisher arcade.

The Platform announced a major tenant of the Boulevard, a mixed-use development slated to open this winter. Orangetheory Fitness will open its first Detroit location in the New Center building.The popular fitness brand, started in Florida in 2010, has 17 locations in Michigan, with many across metro Detroit. Comerica Bank will also be a tenant in the building, and more retail tenants will be announced soon. The Boulevard will have 21,000 square feet of retail total, plus a 330-space attached parking structure.

One of the larger developments in Detroit outside of the central business district is the redevelopment of a whole neighborhood. The Fitzgerald redevelopment aims to take a neighborhood that had many blighted houses and lots, and renovate homes (for sale and for rent) while adding more green space to the neighborhood. It’s a huge endeavor, and one that’s being led by Century Partners and the Platform on a team called FitzForward.
