Michigan State University’s endowment has purchased a majority interest in the historic Fisher Building in Detroit’s New Center area. In addition to buying the Albert Kahn-designed tower affectionately referred to as “Detroit’s largest art object,” the endowment has purchased two surface parking lots adjacent to the 441-foot tower as well as the Baltimore Garage previously controlled by Detroit-based developer and landlord The Platform LLC.

Owners Chelsie and Jono Brymer will open a second location, offering its selection of pastries, lunches, grab-and-go dinners, and sandwiches, in the Fisher Building of Detroit’s New Center. Menu items include Promenade’s signature custardy quiche served with field greens and sea salt chocolate chip cookies. “We are so humbled to have the opportunity to serve in the city that we love and grateful for the chance to learn from this vibrant community,” Chelsie Brymer said.

Real estate developer The Platform purchased the landmark in 2015, spending over $10 million in rehabilitation and renovation. But the company was stuck on what to do with the fourth floor, broken into small offices by design for doctors and dentists.

The next phase of preservation and restoration at the iconic Fisher Building is now underway. This week, work will begin to help a team survey the façade of the building. During a four-month period, workers will comb over the 325,000-square-feet of exterior marble so they can survey the building and collect data. That will help establish a plan to make necessary repairs. Over the next four weeks, crews will install scaffolding around the exterior.
