Streetscape project on McNichols in Detroit’s Fitzgerald neighborhood will begin in May

The City of Detroit will begin its second round of streetscape projects this spring with McNichols Rd. in the Fitzgerald neighborhood, the city announced on Thursday. The purpose of the streetscape project is to create resident-focused streets, according to the city, that serve and attract businesses and families to the neighborhoods.

Streetscape upgrades set for McNichols Road in Detroit

Streetscape improvements are set to begin this spring on McNichols Road in the Fitzgerald neighborhood, the city of Detroit announced Thursday. The stretch of McNichols from Livernois and Greenlawn on the city’s west side will get an overhaul including new sidewalks, benches and pots, and a protected bike and scooter lane.

When Peter Cummings and his development partners began working with Whole Foods Market in 2011 to build its first Detroit store, a Whole Foods executive projected it would generate perhaps $12 million to $15 million a year.

Those projections were more than a little off. Since opening in 2013, Midtown Detroit’s Whole Foods has been generating $30 million annually, Cummings said.

First three houses in Fitzgerald redevelopment hit the market

One of the larger developments in Detroit outside of the central business district is the redevelopment of a whole neighborhood. The Fitzgerald redevelopment aims to take a neighborhood that had many blighted houses and lots, and renovate homes (for sale and for rent) while adding more green space to the neighborhood. It’s a huge endeavor, and one that’s being led by Century Partners and the Platform on a team called FitzForward.

Fitzgerald neighborhood’s $4 million-plus project to be led by The Platform, Century Partners

A team has been chosen to take on a more than $4 million neighborhood redevelopment project in northwest Detroit’s Fitzgerald neighborhood after a request for proposal was issued last summer. The project involves rehabilitating 115 vacant homes in the next two years as for-sale and for-rent and affordable and market-rate housing, creating a 2-acre park and landscaping 192 vacant lots.
