When Peter Cummings and his development partners began working with Whole Foods Market in 2011 to build its first Detroit store, a Whole Foods executive projected it would generate perhaps $12 million to $15 million a year.
Those projections were more than a little off. Since opening in 2013, Midtown Detroit’s Whole Foods has been generating $30 million annually, Cummings said.

The site of a former Joe Muer Seafood location near Eastern Market could be developed with multifamily housing and retail. The developer, The Platform, entered into an agreement with property owner DVP LLC to develop the vacant 4.3-acre site bounded by Gratiot Avenue, St. Aubin Street and East Vernor Highway, near the popular Dequindre Cut walking and biking path.

There’s an odd-shaped 4.3 acre patch of land that greets those traveling southwest down Gratiot Avenue, toward downtown Detroit. This, the former location of the original Joe Muer seafood restaurant, has been announced as the future site of a new mixed-use development that features retail, commercial, and residential units.

The Platform, which describes itself as a leading developer of mixed-use properties in Detroit, entered an agreement with DVP LLC to develop the 4.3-acre site bordered by Gratiot Avenue, St. Aubin Avenue, East Vernor Highway and the Dequindre Cut. Plans are early in the concept phase, so details of what will be built there haven’t been decided.
